<description>I read "Long Way Gone" too after my daughter read it. Pretty depressing, and pretty riveting.

We are sponsoring a Liberian and Sierra Leone refugee family through our our church. While none of them got inducted into the army, they did have to escape their villages several times and wound up in refugee camps in Guinea, and eventually to the U.S. They have a brother who is still working in the diamond mines in Sierra Leone, and parents who are still in Guinea. Problem is we can't get their parents here because the U.S. has stopped granting refugee status to Liberia refugees. The official line is that refugees from Liberia must now return home. But there's no "home" to return to when your village is burned down and grown over by the jungle over the past 10 years. Sad mess.
